About Laurie

Laurie Kwo paints in the space between control and chaos. Her abstract paintings are built through responding, covering, revealing and starting again, trusting instinct over certainty and truth over perfection.

Based in Evanston, just outside Chicago, Kwo's work is held in private and commercial collections nationally, anchored by a 34-piece permanent installation at The Lydian in Chicago. She is represented by The Collective Dallas, Rennie Art Company, Spoonbill Gallery and Jones and Jeffries Gallery.

She is a licensed artist with Wendover Art Group and has sold work on Anthropologie Home.

Artist Statement

My paintings begin with curiosity and end with recognition. Somewhere in between, I remember who I've always been.

The studio is where I indulge my curiosity, covering, revealing, and starting again before I know where I'm headed. Color arrives first as instinct, not decision. What stays and what gets painted over is not always my choice to make.

Sometimes a painting knows more than I do. Making art has taught me to trust what appears before I understand it, and to let the wrong mark become the right one.

My work is not about arriving somewhere new. It is about circling back to something true, and letting it show. When others stand in front of it, I hope they recognize something of themselves too.
